Gardeners across the United Kingdom are facing an unusual and deeply frustrating phenomenon this year. Borders that should be lush and full by midsummer instead appear thin and patchy. The culprit is not a single frost or pest, but a volatile sequence of weather events — record cold, sudden heat and prolonged drought — that has thrown plant growth cycles into chaos.
A Growing Season Marked by Whiplash
The 2026 growing season began with one of the wettest starts to the year in more than a century across parts of the UK. Soils remained waterlogged into spring, delaying planting and stunting early growth. Then, with almost no transitional spring weather, an extraordinary heatwave struck in late May. Kew Gardens recorded a temperature of 35.1°C on May 26, smashing the previous May record for the UK by more than two degrees.
June followed as England’s warmest on record, and by late June a rare red extreme-heat warning — previously issued only once, in 2021 — remained in effect for three consecutive days as temperatures approached 40°C.

Emergency Water Management at Major Gardens
The Royal Horticultural Society, which manages five major public gardens across England, has acknowledged that these conditions are no longer exceptional. Citing severe droughts in 2025, the organization has committed to a series of emergency water-management projects throughout 2026. These include rainwater storage tanks, “ebb and flow” irrigation benches at retail centers, rain gardens and a push for home gardeners to adopt similar measures.

Sunflower Fields and Flower Shows Under Pressure
In Suffolk, the organizers of Horringer Sunflower Field near Bury St Edmunds announced they would not open this year. The field was too large to irrigate, and weeks of waiting for rain proved fruitless. “We are absolutely gutted,” the organizers said, “but we are hopeful for 2027.”
Suffolk was under a hosepipe ban after three consecutive heatwaves left the ground too dry to sustain the crop. Smaller sunflower patches across the region reported similar failures: seeds that never germinated because of cold snaps in early May, followed by soil too parched to recover.
By mid-July, more than eight million UK households were living under hosepipe restrictions. Water companies including Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, South East Water and Southern Water imposed bans — several for the first time in decades. Gardeners have been advised to rely on water butts, greywater from baths and washing-up bowls, and mulching to retain whatever moisture remains in the soil.
Garden Centers Feel the Heat
The extreme weather has also hit the horticulture industry economically. Trade body figures show garden center visits dropped roughly 2% in June compared with the same month last year, while gardening sales fell as much as 13% against 2024 benchmarks.
The pattern mirrors broader retail trends: British Retail Consortium data recorded UK-wide footfall down 3.4% year-on-year in June, with high streets seeing the sharpest drop at 6.2%, as record heat and red weather warnings kept shoppers indoors or pushed them online.
Industry analysts point to a deeper structural problem: wet springs delay planting and suppress early-season sales, then sudden heat spikes create a rush for irrigation equipment and shade plants that arrives too late for garden centers to restock.

This disruption is not limited to Britain. Across Western and Eastern Europe, three successive heatwaves have deepened one of the most severe droughts on record, drying soils, rivers and reservoirs from France to Hungary.

Gardening advice columns are steering growers toward heat-tolerant flowers — zinnias, cosmos, coneflowers and lantana — over thirstier traditional bedding plants.
In Pennsylvania, one long-running sunflower festival was canceled entirely this summer after drought combined with deer damage wiped out the crop before it could bloom — echoing the disappointment felt in Suffolk.
Japan is also forecast to see another summer of above-normal temperatures nationwide, with the country’s meteorological agency flagging knock-on effects for crop growth alongside familiar heatstroke warnings.
Rethinking What a Garden Is For
What emerges from this year’s chaos is less a single freak season than a pattern hardening into a new normal: springs too wet or too cold for plants to establish, followed by heat and drought too extreme for them to bloom on schedule.
For gardeners, this is starting to mean rethinking fundamental assumptions — leaning into drought-tolerant planting, rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse not as niche eco-gardening tips but as basic survival strategy.
For institutions like the RHS, it means retrofitting some of the country’s most cherished gardens for scarcity.
And for anyone who simply wanted a photo among the sunflowers this July — in Suffolk or in Pennsylvania alike — it has meant a summer of empty fields where the flowers were supposed to be.
