Its narrow lanes overflow with roses, lotus, tuberose and, above all, the marigolds that saturate Hindu ritual life\u2014temple offerings, wedding garlands, funeral wreaths. A brutal heatwave collided with the city&#8217;s water crisis just as two major festivals\u2014<strong>Ugadi and Eid<\/strong>\u2014fell days apart. Jasmine, the flower most in demand, jumped from roughly <strong>300 rupees per kilogram to 600 rupees<\/strong> almost overnight. Roses doubled in price. Longtime vendors, some working the market for three decades, said plainly that heat and water shortages had throttled the harvest just as demand spiked. There simply were not enough blooms.<\/p>\n<p>A year with better rains told the opposite story: with crop yields up, jasmine prices for the same festival season fell by half in a single day, as growers finally had enough water and cool nights to bring a full crop to market at once. Multiply that whiplash across India&#8217;s dozens of regional flower markets, most serving religious occasions on fixed calendar dates that cannot be postponed for weather, and an entire ritual economy is improvising in real time every time the monsoon arrives early, late, or not at all.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"thenetherlandsaclimatebuiltindoorsexposeditsweakspot\">The Netherlands: A Climate Built Indoors Exposed Its Weak Spot<\/h2>\n<p>If Kenya, the Andes and India are exposed to the sky, the Netherlands built an industry that seemed to escape it. Around <strong>Aalsmeer<\/strong>, south of Amsterdam, the <strong>Royal FloraHolland<\/strong> auction moves more than <strong>40 million stems daily<\/strong> through a warehouse the size of roughly 200 football fields\u2014flowers arriving from more than 60 countries, sorted, priced by a descending &#8220;Dutch auction&#8221; clock, and shipped onward within hours. Much of what fuels this system is grown inside vast climate-controlled greenhouses that use artificial lighting and heating to manufacture a perfect, endless spring.<\/p>\n<p>That engineered independence revealed its own vulnerability when Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine sent European natural gas prices to <strong>20 times normal levels<\/strong> in 2022. Dutch greenhouse growers, who depend on gas-fired heating to keep tulips, roses and orchids growing through cold, dark winters, suddenly could not afford the climate control that made their business possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grower Ruud van der Lans<\/strong> made the unprecedented decision to switch off lights in 80 percent of his greenhouses that winter simply to survive the bill. Industry groups estimated that <strong>up to 40 percent<\/strong> of the country&#8217;s roughly 3,000 greenhouse businesses faced financial distress. The number of growers abandoning the trade more than doubled that year, cutting roughly <strong>100 million euros<\/strong> from annual flower production almost overnight.<\/p>\n<p>It was a stark reminder: even an industry built to defeat weather with steel and glass remains an energy-intensive way of substituting for a stable climate. When the underlying systems that make artificial climates affordable become unstable, the greenhouse offers no real shelter. In response, some Dutch growers have poured tens of millions of euros into <strong>geothermal heating and biomass plants<\/strong>, treating energy diversification as its own form of climate adaptation, alongside newer efforts to recycle up to 90 percent of water used across the sector.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"anindustrybuiltonborrowedweather\">An Industry Built on Borrowed Weather<\/h2>\n<p>What connects a flooded rose farm in Kenya, a drought-stressed hillside in Ecuador, a heatwave in Bengaluru, and a gas crisis in a Dutch greenhouse is the same underlying fact: the modern flower trade was built by identifying the handful of places on Earth where weather happened to be nearly perfect for growing delicate, fast-perishing crops, and then betting an entire global logistics network on that weather staying put.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Valentine&#8217;s Day and Mother&#8217;s Day<\/strong>\u2014the two biggest days on the floral calendar\u2014now depend on cargo planes lifting off from Bogot\u00e1, Quito and Nairobi, which depend on harvests timed to the day, which depend on rainfall and temperature patterns that used to be reliable enough to build a business around.<\/p>\n<p>They no longer are, uniformly. Growers everywhere are adapting in the ways available to them: moving greenhouses to higher ground in Kenya, diversifying rose varieties bred for heat and drought tolerance in the Andes, building better water storage in Indian growing villages, and chasing energy independence in Dutch greenhouses.<\/p>\n<p>None of it is a permanent fix. All of it is an admission that the old assumption\u2014that the sky would simply keep cooperating\u2014no longer holds.<\/p>\n<p>For the vendor at Mallick Ghat sorting marigolds at dawn, or the farmer paddling a boat past his flooded greenhouse on Lake Naivasha, the flower trade was never really about flowers. It was about borrowing a very specific, very fragile kind of weather and turning it into a livelihood.
